Nicole Richie turns herself into jail, leaves same day
A very pregnant Nicole Richie turned herself into to Lynwood jail on Thursday for her supposed 4 day jail sentence.
Nicole was released later that day after serving only 82 minutes in the slammer. She entered at around 3:15 p.m. and was released around 4:37 p.m, a bit less than the sentenced 96 hours.
Why was Nicole Richie released from jail? The answer is simple: overcrowding.
In a statement, the Sheriff's Department said that Richie's stay was cut short by guidelines established to deal with jail overcrowding. The department is evidently under federal court order to reduce overcrowding at its jail facilities, and that causes some inmates to be released well before their sentence. Nonviolent female inmates sentenced to less than 30 days in jail normally stay less than 12 hours, according to the statement.
Richie served her time at the same Lynwood county jail where her frienemy, Paris Hilton, was detained in her probation violation case.
Nicole was arrested in December for driving the wrong way on the freeway. She admitted to cops that she had smoked marijuana and taken the painkiller Vicodin.
This wasn't The Simple Life star's first run in with the cops. In 2003, Richie was arrested on suspicion of heroin possession and spent time in rehabilitation.
