Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts has undergone "very successful" surgery to remove a cancerous growth from her breast.

Roberts, who announced she was suffering from the disease on GMA on Tuesday of this week,  had the operation in New York City on Friday.

The 46-year-old admitted she was inspired to go for a cancer screening following the death of former ABC movie critic Joel Siegel, who passed away from colon cancer last month.
