The View goes to Whoopi
It's official. Barbara Walters announced on Wednesday morning that Whoopi Goldberg will be the new moderator of the View when it returns for it's 11th season in September.
"I have known Whoopi for years," Walters said in a statement. "She is brilliant, funny and irrepressible, and is an enormously popular and talented star. We are delighted that she is going to join the program as our moderator. This is going to be a great new chapter for 'The View.'"
Goldberg has sat in as a guest host a few times since Rosie O'Donnell abruptly vacated the . She joins Walters and current "View" panelists Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Joy Behar.
It was also expected that Walters would announce comedian Sherri Shepherd as a regular addition to the show, but no such announcement came. InTouch Weekly is reporting that negotiations stalled, because Shepherd and ABC couldn't reach common ground on a dollar figure.
“They just couldn’t work out the money part of it,” an insider tells In Touch. “They weren’t willing to pay Sherri what she was asking for.”
The magazine also reports that it might be because Sherri demanded at least $2 million — which insiders say is what Whoopi will receive for her first year on the air.
Maybe Kathy Griffin still stands a chance at the job after all! Meanwhile, let's hope that Whoopi adds that liberal flare and fights with Hasselbeck just like Rosie did.
