Granny undies be gone. The latest trend in shape-shifting undergarments is sleeker, sexier and guaranteed to suck you in, lift you up and push you out in all the right places - all without the enormous panties.
At just $27.50 for the plunge halter bra and $60 for the waist-cinching brief (an underwear-corset combo that can take several inches off the belly area if you can handle not breathing for the evening), the Shapewear line claims to mimic the effect of plastic surgery on the body by using a corset instead of a knife.
And its co-creator knows a thing or two about cosmetic enhancement. The product, which hit Sears stores this month, was designed by plastic surgeon-to-the-stars Dr. Robert Rey of the hit reality series "Dr. 90210," along with the fashionable help of Australian lingerie designer.
"The support panels are sewn exactly as I would do in the operating room, so there's a similar result as to what we achieve in surgery. It's like having a tummy tuck, a butt lift, a breast lift and lipo, all without the surgery."
The most daunting garment in the Shapewear collection of 15 pieces is the Shape 6X-Treme plunge dress, a full-bodied corset, booty lifter and push-up bra designed to wear under form-fitting dresses.
The plunge dress itself looks like a sexy little black minidress, except for being extra mini! It could be meant for a toddler. The neckline plunges right below the bra line, allowing for an ample amount of cleavage to poke through, and the bottom has a silicone hem to keep it in place on your upper thighs.
Did we mention it is really mini? To squeeze into this sausage casing, it's best to sit down and plunge both legs through the opening in one swift motion, then hop up and pull the top up with great force as the spandex grabs, hugs and then immediately sucks your lumpy bits (already bloated from a breakfast of sausage, egg and cheese) right into place.
For all the work it takes to get it on, once on your body the plunge dress (left) doesn't feel aggressively constricting. Its tug and pull is about as offensive as a pair of control top pantyhose, but it certainly does flatten the stomach and lift the boobs into place.
Its claim to siphon you down two dress sizes is a little bold, but it certainly takes you down one dress size, and it definitely lifts the breasts and buttocks into a great voluptuous shape.
"Shapers have been Hollywood's little secret on the red carpet for years. Do you think those stars naturally fit into those dresses?" says Bruno Schiavi when describing his designs. "But they have never been so accessible to the average woman. Our line is designed to make any woman feel great in a little dress and give her a boost of confidence."
And Hollywood does agree. At the launch of the product at Hollywood nightclub Opera on Oct. 25, Carmen Electra (no stranger to teensy dresses) had the highest praise for the corsets, saying they "really work."
A shape-shifting garment is never going to be as a sexy as a lacy thing, but Rey's line comes a lot closer to keeping you sexy when your clothes are on and then once they come off.
