Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, says he is running for President and will challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Nomination in 2016.
“After a year of travel, discussion and dialogue, I have decided to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president,” Mr. Sanders said in a letter to supporters.
Sanders also outlined his platform which includes reducing income inequality, addressing climate change and scaling back the influence of money in politics.
The Senator’s campaign seems to be off to an unorganized start. His aides told The New York Times that Sanders would hold a formal campaign kickoff on May 26th in Burlington, Vermont (where he served as Mayor). Instead he issued a statement on Thursday announcing his bid for President. Sanders also has plans for an event this weekend in Manchester, New Hampshire.
